Learning Through Exploration of an Online School

Download: Riedel_SITE-04.doc

This paper examines the use of data generated by recording the information preservice teachers access in online scenarios in which they are asked to make decisions about using technology in fictitious schools (eTIP Cases). The data are reported back to students and teacher education faculty in several forms including a relevancy index which measures how closely student searches of the problem space resembled that of an expert. Preliminary analysis of data generated by use of the cases in 34 teacher preparation courses showed that students narrowed their searches over multiple cases and increased their relevancy index scores. Relevancy scoring seems to have potential for reflecting refinements by students in their searches of a problem space over time. The use of relevancy scores varied widely among test-bed faculty members, suggesting further research is needed on influencing conditions for the use of expert models in online scenarios.
